Geelong Junior Club Championship Wrap Up!

Well done to all of our players and teams who competed in the Junior Club Tri State  tournament down in Geelong in February. We had our largest ever number of players participate in the tournament, with 45 players across 5 teams (12s mixed, 14s boys, 14s girls, 16s boys, 16s girls)! Congratulations to our 14s girls team who had a great tournament playing 2nd! They edged out the MC in a thrilling penalty shout out 3-0, after the game finished 4-4, and then pushed Essendon all the way, 4-7 in the final. Well done also to our 14s boys who also scored a medal as semi finalists! Out of the pool  everyone had a great time and a huge thank you to Perri Randall and John Mason for coaching and organizing our teams and accommodation for the weekend. Thank you also to all the parents who helped out throughout the weekend.

2018 WSL1 & MSL2 Winter Competition Premiers!

Congratulations to our WSL1 team for winning their winter competition grand final 8-6 over Footscray! The girls played a controlled game to keep Footscray just out of reach after pulling away in the 2nd quarter. The grand final winning streak continues to build for this team!

Congratulations to our MSL2 team on their grand final win against MC blackballs. The boys won out 5-2 in a tight low scoring game with goal keeper Dave Miller saving two penalties. It was a deserved win however it was 3-1 mid way through the 4th quarter, before goals from Gareth Hunter and Brendan Miller confirmed the result.

This team is building steadily and they know there is still a lot of room for improvement and still have more to be achieved in the main competition this year. Well done again on a top performance guys!

Our WSL2 team should also be commended for a good performance in tough game against rivals Melbourne Uni. While the ladies loss out 3-6, the game was close and we were within a goal until late in the 4th quarter. At least there was birthday cake for coach John Mason as a consolation prize.

2018 Pan Pacs in Auckland

Congratulations to our players who recently participated in the 2018 Pan Pacs water polo tournament in Auckland over the past school holidays. Our club had five of our members travel over in Auckland. Caitlin Ward played in the Victorian u14s girls team, while Rebecca Andrews team managed the Victorian u14s & u16s girls teams. Michael Taylor played u18s & u20s for the Canterbury NZ team. While Ryan Zibell and Daniel Ward played for the Maranui team in the u16s boys competition. All players had really positive experiences at the tournament both in at out of the water.

Tintern Training camp – July 2018

The club ran another successful training camp for under 12 and under 14 sub juniors at Tintern Grammar, East Ringwood over the first week of the July 2018 school holidays.

We had 26 children attend over the 2 days with a mix of existing players & those trying Water Polo for the first time. The programme included whiteboard sessions, a multitude of drills, swimming sessions & plenty of match time.

It was especially pleasing to see children of existing senior players come along & try water polo (Jonah Smith, Aaron’s son), several kids brand new to the sport and participants from Monash Uni Water Polo. Our established players made everyone feel welcome & included.

The camp would not have been possible without the volunteer effects of so many people. Nicole Lewis & Sharon Miller for helping out with morning snacks & lunch preparation. Fraser Tanner, Gabriel Malvestuto, Daniel Ward & Will Collum for assisting with coaching. Thanks also to Jane Ward for organising the coaching programme, promotional gifts, kitchen help & photography.

On behalf of the club, I’d also like to extend our thanks Gareth Hunter who was able to coach the group for the entire camp. His positivity & enthusiasm for water polo was obvious & very infectious. Thanks also to the team at Tintern Grammar & Kurt Mattingley our pool life guard for the 2 days.

Stay tuned for further camp programmes later in the year.

Our First NYP Dragons School Holiday Water Polo Program!

During the summer school holidays our club ran its first ever school holiday water polo program! Thanks to the efforts of John Malvestuto, Jane Ward and Perri Randall an idea quickly transformed into reality, and we had over 20 of our players attending the two day camp at Tintern pool. The program was really rewarding and a lot of fun for all involved. Thank you to all the organisers and coaches, and also to the 18s players Will Collum and Gabriel Malvestuto for assisting on the days. We look forward to continuing to creating more opportunities like these in the future.

Geelong Junior Club Championship

Congratulations to our NYP Dragons teams who competed in the Junior Tri State Champions ships in Geelong this weekend. Our u16 boys were bronze medalists and our u14 boys and u14 girls teams both took out 6th place. We also had a number of u16 girls playing with Essendon who also put in a great performance. All players did the club proud and had a wonderful weekend of water polo. Thank you to all the parents and coaches for helping out and making this weekend possible.

Women’s 2018 Polo by the Pier Winners!

Congratulations to our Women’s team that won the 2018 Polo by the Pier tournament in Portsea last Saturday. Our women won a close final 4-3, overturning a loss to their grand final opponent earlier in the day. Our men also performed well with the Blue team making the men’s final, but backing up for their 5th game of the day, lost out 1-5.

The day was a lot of fun despite (as usual) the sun only breaking through the clouds late in the day. The move from a December to February tournament was definitely a positive one though with the water temp much warmer than previous years. We look forward to pushing for the double next year!
